Laryngeal cancer survivors find their voice
Margaret Cronkwright found out she had to have her larynx removed within one week.
Victor Grikes had his larynx removed when he was 70 years old. Now at 90, he’s been communicating through a stoma for 20 years.
Margaret and Victor are survivors of laryngeal cancer. Removal of the larynx (also known as your voice box) meant the voice they were born with was lost. They needed to learn how to communicate in new ways, and learn how to cope with their new voice.
That’s why they are proud members of the New Voice Club of Hamilton. Hosted at St. Joe’s with our Speech-Language Pathologists, the club offers rehabilitation therapy and support to over 100 cancer survivors across the region. St. Joe’s is a regional centre for Head and Neck Cancer.
Watch Margaret and Victor share how the club has made a difference in their lives.
