St. Joe’s Leaps Ahead in Annual Ranking of Top 40 Research Hospitals
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is thrilled to be celebrating moving up two ranks in the overall annual rankings of research hospitals across Canada. According to Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals 2023, published by Research Infosource, St. Joe’s ranked 22nd overall, moving ahead two spots from 24th overall in the previous year. The publication includes data from academic hospitals of all sizes nationwide – large, medium, and small.
In the category of Hospital Research Spending Growth, St Joe’s has impressively ranked in 5th place, climbing up 10 spots over the previous year.
In the subcategory focused on medium-sized hospitals, St. Joe’s held its rank at 5th place for Research Intensity (average funding per investigator). Additionally, the latest publication places St. Joe’s a rank higher than last year for Hospital Intensity (research funding as a percentage of total hospital funding), coming in at 5th place.
“Year over year, St. Joe’s research enterprise has been growing steadily, as demonstrated in our ranking among Canada’s top five in research spending growth for 2023,” said Dr. Lehana Thabane, Vice President, Research of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Scientific Director of The Research Institute. “We’re grateful to have such dedicated researchers and staff who share a collective vision for success inspired by compassion.”
For the first time in its history, The Research Institute of St. Joe’s is finalized and launched its new Strategic Research Plan in 2023, entitled “Health and Humanity for All.” The strategic plan will bolster our progress and further reinforce our vision for growing research at St. Joe's.
“The new five-year strategic research plan solidifies our overall purpose: to lead discoveries, to challenge the status quo, and to translate learnings from bench to bedside,” said Sarah Howe, Executive Director of The Research Institute. “To that end, the plan’s five strategic objectives, designed with input from our diverse research community, will guide us in pursuit of further growth that ultimately benefits patients and their families.”
Data for Ontario hospitals are obtained from the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO). The 2023 rankings are based on the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals is part of a publication by Research Infosource called Canada's Innovation Leaders. It is available online and will also appear in the Friday, December 8, 2023 edition of the National Post in the GTHA, Montréal, and Ottawa.
