Passing of Dr. Anil Kapoor
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Anil Kapoor. Dr. Kapoor passed away in the early hours of February 28 after a short and courageous battle with an acute illness. His loss is deeply felt by the entire urologic and genitourinary cancer community coast to coast, as well as to those who worked with him here at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton through the years.
His life and career were dedicated to advancing care in kidney cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. He was an integral member of the Division of Urology at McMaster University since its inception and served the Hamilton community for more than two decades. He was a long-time member of the Department of Surgery, and one of our key leaders in surgical innovation at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and was the Director of the Urologic Cancer Centre for Research & Innovation at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
Dr. Kapoor was deeply committed to pursuing new knowledge, testing new medications and employing laparoscopic surgical techniques to help those living with cancers of the bladder, kidneys and prostate. He led the Genitourinary Research Pillar of The Research Institute of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and was a Professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster University. He held numerous roles within the Division of Urology, at the Canadian Urologic Association, and with Kidney Cancer Canada just to name a few.
Dr. Kapoor was also a passionate advocate for the role philanthropy can play in advancing research and care at our hospital. He worked closely with grateful patients, our generous community and colleagues at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation to garner transformational gifts for healthcare research that will advance care for patients living with urologic conditions and cancers for decades to come.
He will be remembered as a cancer surgeon, researcher, educator, colleague, and friend.
In honour of Dr. Kapoor, we have lowered all flags at each Campus to half-mast for a 48-hour period as of Thursday, March 2.
Our hearts go out to Dr. Kapoor's family at this difficult time.
