Medical Affairs
The Department of Medical Affairs facilitates and supports the relationship between the Credentialed Professional Staff (physicians, midwives and dentists), Medical Trainees (physician residents, clinical fellows and undergraduate medical students), Physician Assistants and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Working closely with medical leaders, hospital administrative leaders, and McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences, the Department of Medical Affairs manages the following processes to achieve its mandate:

Dr. Janet Farrell, Chief of Anesthesia
Dr. Janet Farrell obtained a BSC (honors biology) and then attended medical school and anesthesiology residency at McMaster University. Dr. Farrell is a full-time clinician at SJHH, a Clinical Professor at McMaster University, and an active educator of residents, undergraduates and allied health professionals. During her tenure as Chief of Anesthesia, Dr. Farrell has dealt with numerous challenges, leading her to learn a considerable amount about the intricacies involved in the provision of health care.
Dr. Farrell’s special interests include understanding and trying to optimize the patient journey in the hospital, meeting with patients and families when there are issues and working to resolve these issues in a timely and satisfactory manner, and understanding and improving team dynamics in the operating room.

My favorite quote is from the Dalai Lama: "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion". One of the guiding principles of SJHH is the practice of safe, excellent and compassionate care, and that shines through every single day. I really enjoy the hospital atmosphere, the staff, learners and patients here, and consider it a great privilege to be a member of this staff. The medical, nursing and allied professionals are an amazing group of individuals, and they inspire me daily. It is indeed a tremendous privilege to care for the sick and disadvantaged in a supportive and collegial setting.
Dr. Andrew Healey, Chief of Critical Care
Dr. Healey received his Doctor of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland then completed his fellowship training in emergency and critical care medicine at McMaster University. He completed his International Master in Donation of Organs, Tissues, and Cells for Transplantation at the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain. He was the Founding Chair of the Area of Focused Competence in Acute Care Point of Care Ultrasonography for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, was the founding director of the Point-of-Care Ultrasound program here at St. Joe’s, and recently received this AFC Diploma from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has completed several professional education programs focused on the science and practice of leadership.
Dr. Healey is the Provincial Medical Director for Organ Donation at Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network). He is also a health system leader as a GTA West Cluster Lead on the Greater Toronto Hospital COVID Incident Management System Operations Lead and now as a regional Critical Care Lead with Ontario Health for Central Subregion.
Dr. Healey is highly committed to his leadership values of generosity, excellence, and courage. He has a strong interest in leadership and learning and a strong belief in reinforcing accountability, collaborative care, and system-level improvement. He has enjoyed his time at St. Joe’s and is excited to begin this new leadership role where he has an opportunity to advance the organization’s worldwide reputation in critical care teaching, research, and clinical care.
Dr. Colm Boylan
Dr. Erich Hanel, Interim Chief of Emergency Medicine
Dr. Hanel is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at McMaster University. He completed his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Family Medicine residency at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and Emergency Medicine at McMaster. He joined St. Joe’s in 2012 as an Emergency Medicine Physician and has contributed to the hospital’s innovative teaching environment with a strong commitment to excellent patient care, receiving numerous clinical teaching and scholarship awards. He has served as Family Medicine Emergency Medicine and Enhanced Skills Residency since 2019. He is also an EMS Medical Director with the Centre for Paramedic Education and Research.
In the role of Interim Chief of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Hanel supervises standards of medical care, partners with the Director and Manager to oversee clinical operations of the Emergency Department, and is responsible for physician staffing, recruitment and retention as well as for supporting education and research.
Dr. Varun Chaudhary, Chief of Eye Medicine & Surgery
Dr. Chaudhary is a vitreo-retinal surgeon at Hamilton Regional Eye Institute, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Associate Professor of Surgery at McMaster University. He is the Chief of Ophthalmology at Hamilton Regional Eye Institute as well as Physician Lead for Ophthalmology for HNHB LHIN. He is a clinical expert advisor and is actively involved in provincial working groups developing best practice guidelines for retinal and corneal diseases.
He specializes in providing care for patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy and surgical retinal diseases (including retinal detachment repair, macular hole repair and managing complications of diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration).
Dr. Chaudhary is actively involved in clinical research to deliver the highest quality of care to patients with retinal disease. He has been principal/chief investigator for multi-centered clinical trials in Age-Related Macular Degeneration. He has been principal/chief investigator for clinical studies for novel treatments and therapies such as combination treatment to optimize outcomes in Age-Related Macular Degeneration. He has been awarded the Honor Award by the American Society of Retinal Specialists for his research work in the area of retinal diseases.
Dr. Katalin Ivanyi, Interim Chief of Family Medicine
Dr. Ivanyi is a family physician with a full-scope primary care practice in the McMaster Family Health Team at Stonechurch Family Health Centre (SFHC) on the East Mountain in Hamilton. In addition, she provides low risk intrapartum obstetrical care and in-hospital newborn care through the Maternity Centre and Newborn Care Rota at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) respectively.
Dr. Ivanyi has been a member of the SJHH community since 1994 and during that time has contributed to SJHH as the Head of Service of Maternal Newborn Care, Chair of the Family Medicine Obstetrics Quality Assurance Committee, and Assistant Chief of the Department of Family Medicine. Katalin is currently a member of the Greater Hamilton Health Network (GHHN) Primary Care Executive Committee.
What about SJHH keeps you inspired?
There is truly something special about the St. Joes family in that we have been able to preserve a real sense of community along with being a large tertiary care teaching hospital. As primary care physicians, our various roles in the hospital are valued by our specialist colleagues, and there is a real sense of respect for community-based partners in the health care system. There is also a real sense of commitment to our patient population, many of whom face multiple vulnerabilities beyond their medical care needs. I believe this stems from the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph who have instilled a true belief in our hospital motto - that it's an honour to serve.
Dr. Vasudhevan (Tony) Chetty, Chief of Laboratory Medicine
Dr. Chetty obtained his MD in South Africa. He obtained his FRCPC Medical Biochemistry, as well as his MSc Health Research Methodology through McMaster University.
He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Chetty holds the title of Division Head Clinical Chemistry and Immunology at SJHH. He is also the Chair of the Bariatric Medical Clinic at SJHH.
Dr. Chetty’s research interests include Laboratory Utilization, and Clinical Trials of New Pharmacological approaches in Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Dr. Madeleine Verhovsek, Chief of Medicine
Dr. Madeleine Verhovsek is a Professor in the Division of Hematology and Thromboembolism at McMaster University, Director of the Adult Hemoglobinopathy Program at McMaster University Medical Centre, Consultant Laboratory Hematologist for the Red Cell Disorders Laboratory (Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program) and the Chief of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
Prior to coming into the role of Chief of Medicine, Dr. Verhovsek was the Head of Service for Hematology and Thromboembolism. She has worked as a staff physician at SJHH since 2010. She is actively involved in medical education and research, with strong professional commitment to quality of care, health equity, anti-racism, advocacy and capacity building.
Dr. Verhovsek is extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with brilliant, dedicated physicians across the 15 services of the SJHH Department of Medicine, and in collaboration with other leaders and SJHH staff to achieve our goal of outstanding care for all our patients.

Ms. Angela Reitsma, Chief of Midwifery
Ms. Angela Reitsma has served as the Interim Chief of the Department of Midwifery since it’s creation in 2021. Prior to that, Angela was the Head of Service for Midwifery under the Department of Family Medicine.
Ms. Reitsma is a Registered Midwife with a community midwifery practice and has worked at SJHH since 2007. She obtained her degree in midwifery at McMaster University (2007), a degree in Health Studies from the University of Waterloo, and a Master of Science degree from McMaster University in Clinical Epidemiology (2012). Angela is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at McMaster University, and has previously taught Research Methods to midwifery students in the Midwifery Education Program and remains involved in midwifery research that is ongoing through the McMaster Midwifery Research Centre.
Since taking on a leadership role at SJHH, Angela has focused on quality of care in midwifery. She developed and currently chairs the Midwifery Quality of Care Committee. Angela also works with the leaders of nursing, family medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics, and anesthesia to ensure strong partnerships through the interrelated work of the birthing and postpartum units. She is also working with hospital leadership to expand the role of midwifery in the hospital setting.
Dr. Christopher Marriott, Chief of Nuclear Medicine
Dr. Marriott is an active staff physician across both Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. He holds a Ph.D. from Université Laval and an M.D. from Université de Sherbrooke.
Dr. Marriott completed his Nuclear Medicine residency training at the University of Western Ontario and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is chief examiner for the specialty and has been actively involved in the OMA, both at council and board level, as well as with CPSO with respect to practice quality in the IHF sector.
Dr. Marriott is interim Chief of Nuclear Medicine for both St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences. He has particular clinical interests in both PET imaging and radioisotope therapy.

Dr. Susan Ellis, Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology
Dr. Susan Ellis is the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology and an Associate Professor at McMaster University. She is the co-chair of the Southern Ontario Maternal Child Network and a member of the Maternal Neonatal Committee of the Provincial Council of Maternal and Child Health.
Dr. Ellis is a graduate of McMaster University Medical School and went on to complete her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster. Her career focus is clinical education, quality and patient safety. She became increasingly engaged in simulation and understanding the intersection between education, simulation and patient safety. Dr. Ellis completed a course at the Mayo Clinic to become a simulation instructor. She went on to develop simulation curriculum for the residency program; later expanding to in situ simulations involving healthcare teams with a focus on team communication and identifying latent safety threats. Dr. Ellis’s advocacy lead to the opening of the first nurse lead, physician support early pregnancy assessment clinic in Hamilton, following the Health Quality Ontario standards.

Dr. Angelo Mikrogianakis, Chief of Pediatrics
Dr. Angelo Mikrogianakis is the Chief of Pediatrics at McMaster Children’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. He leads our physicians, staff, researchers, and allied healthcare teams towards a brighter future for every child. A passionate advocate, Dr. Mikrogianakis collaborates with local, regional, and national colleagues and changemakers to support excellence and accessibility in pediatric healthcare for our care centres and broader communities.

Dr. Nora Cullen, Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Dr. Nora Cullen is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) with a BSc (1989) and MSc (1990) from the University of Toronto in Neuroscience/Psychology and neurophysiology and later medical school (1990) and residency at the University of Toronto (1998). She completed a fellowship in Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation in Detroit, Michigan at Wayne State University (1999). Her area of sub specialization is in the recovery of adults who acquired a brain injury and she has been very involved in researching ways of maximizing recovery in adults with brain injury and teaching medical students, residents and fellows the rehabilitation management of brain injured adults. Currently, she is a Professor at McMaster University where she is the Division Director of PM&R in the Department of Medicine, and Chief of PM&R at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences. She is also the chair of NepalAbility, a charitable organization in Nepal which seeks to support people living with disability in Nepal.

My best advice would be to do what you love.
What was the best advice you have received with regards to career development?
The best advice that I received was to find roles that I am passionate about and follow them.
Dr. Maxine Lewis, Chief of Psychiatry
Dr. Maxine Lewis has been Chief of the Mental Health and Addictions Program at St Joe's since 2019. Dr. Lewis obtained her MD at the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK and completed psychiatry residency at the University of Leeds, UK where she gained her MRCPsych and a Masters in Clinical Psychiatry. After completing a Fellowship in General and Geriatric Psychiatry she worked as Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK before moving to Canada in 2004. Dr. Lewis has been a Staff Psychiatrist at St Joe's since 2004 and has held a number of hospital administrative positions including Head of Service of the Geriatric Psychiatry and Mood Disorders Service at St Joe's and Joint Chief of Psychiatry for Niagara Health and St Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Dr. Lewis is an Associate Professor with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and works clinically as a Geriatric Psychiatrist with the Seniors Mental Health Service at St Joe's.

Dr. Bobby Shayegan, Chief of Surgery
Dr. Bobby Shayegan is the Chief of Surgery at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. A nationally recognized expert in robotically-assisted prostate cancer surgery, Dr. Shayegan has worked at St. Joe’s since 2006. Dr. Shayegan has served as the Deputy Chief of Surgery for the last 13 years. He continues to serve as Division Head of Urology. Dr. Shayegan started his new role as Chief of Surgery on April 1, 2023.
Dr. Shayegan received his MD from the University of Toronto in 1999. In 2004, Dr. Shayegan completed his residency in urology at the University of Toronto, followed by a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

The Credentials Office provides services to support the relationship between St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences and the Credentialed Professional Staff (physicians, dentists & midwives) of the respective organizations. The office supports the administration of new appointments, reappointments, and observers for SJHH and HHS.

Reappointment
Your appointment to the Professional Staff is valid for one year (July 1 – June 30). Each February, you will receive a Reappointment Application from the Credentials office to renew your appointment for the following year.

Observers
The Credentials Office processes applications for independently licensed physicians to observe a physician at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and/or Hamilton Health Sciences.
To arrange an observership, it is the observer’s responsibility to secure a Sponsor for the term of the observership. Once the Sponsor agrees to be the designated Sponsor, they will advise the observer to contact the Credentials Office to obtain the required paperwork.
Note for Observers: please do not contact the Credentials Office until you have secured a Sponsor. The Credentials Office is unable to assist with securing a Sponsor.
Eligibility for a Physician Observership
Eligible applicants for an observership include:
- Canadian or International Medical Doctor
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who have been accepted to the McMaster University Post Graduate Medical Education Program
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who have completed the Medical Council of Canada QE1 examination (MCCQE1)
Ineligible applicants are as follows:
- All Medical Students (CA/US/International)*
- All Medical Residents (CA/US/International)*
- Undergraduate students or student learners
*Medical Student & Resident placements should be supported through McMaster University’s Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) & Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) electives program.

In-Person Orientation
All new Professional Staff of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton are required to attend an in-person orientation session as part of their onboarding experience. You will receive an invitation, from the Chief of Staff & VP Medical and Academic Affairs Office, with information regarding the orientation session.
Medical Advisory Committee (MAC)
The Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) is accountable to the Board of Governors in accordance with the Public Hospitals Act. The committee is in place to promote the highest standards of medical care, professionalism throughout the hospital, and commitment to continuous quality improvement that support patient-centered care.

The MAC has a number of subcommittees which provides for leadership opportunities for physicians and service to monitor and improve policies and quality initiatives. These subcommittees include:

The Board will appoint the chair for a three-year term, renewable once. The role is defined and outlined in the Public Hospitals Act and the SJHH Professional Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations.
Medical Staff Association (MSA)
All eligible Medical Staff are automatically granted membership to the Medical Staff Association (MSA) for the duration of their Medical Staff status at SJHH. The MSA Executive's mandate is to represent the best interests of the Medical Staff Association Membership. The MSA also recognizes the importance of modeling and sustaining a positive environment for physicians to enhance their professional quality of life and in turn the quality of care provided to our patients.
The MSA at SJHH:
- Provides a forum for determination of common goals and the prioritization therein
- Facilitates communication and collaboration across the medical staff
- Engages with hospital Administration and provides effective representation of the MSA
- Models and sustains a positive physician climate which serves to enhance professional quality of life
- Collects dues to help cover the costs of expenses incurred at the Annual Medical Staff Dinner Gala, quarterly medical staff meetings, exemplary service awards, annual “best residents” awards, donations, administrative support, medical staff stipends, and philanthropic activities of the medical staff
The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton
As an academic health sciences centre, The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton is affiliated with the world-renowned McMaster University, where life-changing research and innovation benefits patients, where we educate the world’s best and create a healthier community.
Our researchers are performing clinical, translational, evaluative, and fundamental science in our Hospital.
Research at St. Joe’s occurs across five pillars, in tandem with our areas of clinical expertise. These are: Mental Health & Addiction, Lungs & Chest, Father Sean O’Sullivan Research Centre, Kidney, and Genitourinary.
The Department of Education and Learning
As an internationally recognized academic health sciences centre, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is a leader in education and clinical integrative care. The Centre for Education Learning & Simulation (CELS)
The Centre for Education Learning & Simulation (CELS) is designed to support simulation, education, collaboration, research, innovation and patient care at SJHH. CELS provides a learning environment that will help to improve the onboarding experience for staff, physicians and learners, to further develop skills to reduce adverse events and critical incidents and improve patient safety and quality of care at SJHH. CELS promotes collaboration and interprofessional education leading to enhanced patient care. The Centre is also designed to promote educational research and provide support for St. Joseph’s Education Research Centre (SERC). CELS layout allows for flexibility and collaboration in promoting the introduction and teaching of innovative projects and products and highlighting SJHH as a leader in healthcare delivery.
