Visiting Hours

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton wants to ensure that all visiting family and friends feel very welcome at our Hospital and included in the care of our patients when appropriate. To allow greater access for our visitors, we have ended the concept of specific visiting hours.

Effective November 15th 2016, visitors are welcome at any time on all Inpatient Units at each Campus. With this change, we request our staff and visitor’s support in caring for our patients by following Policy 018-ADM, Visiting Guidelines Supporting the Presence of Families and Other Partners in Care and by being considerate of their actions.

The only exception is that visitors of patients in the Forensic Psychiatry Program must follow the procedures as outlined the Forensic Psychiatry Procedure Manual.

Visiting loved ones is an important part of patient care and visitors are also often our partners in care. This change has come as a recommendation from our patients and their families, evidence based practice, as well as aligning with other health care partners throughout Canada.

What to Consider before Visiting

  • To maintain a safe environment for care, visitors shall be asked to limit the number of people visiting to two (2) per patient at a time.
  • At St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, we ask that you wash your hands thoroughly with either soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizer when:
    • Entering or leaving the hospital
    • Entering or leaving a patient room
    • Before and after touching a patient or patient environment
    • Before and after eating
    • When hands are visibly soiled
    • After using the toilet
    • After coughing or sneezing
    • Cough or sneeze into your elbow and not into your hands
  • Persons who are feeling unwell and who may have an infectious illness (e.g. fever, cough, sneezing, sore throat, skin rash, vomiting or diarrhea within the past 48 hours) are encouraged to refrain from visiting until they are well.
  • Children less than 14 years of age are welcome in most areas of the hospital but must be directly supervised by an adult (18 years of age or over) who is able to provide such supervision.
  • Out of concern for latex sensitive patients and staff, latex balloons are not permitted in the hospital.
  • We ask that our visitors, patients, employees and volunteers abstain from wearing heavily scented perfumes to be considerate of those with sensitivity.
  • Visitors are asked to consult the nursing station in the unit to inquire about whether food or drink is permitted in patient rooms.
  • Please note, chicken pox and measles are potentially very dangerous to newborn babies and sick children. If you or any members of your family have the chicken pox or measles, or have had these within the last month please call us at 905.522.1155 ext. 33237 before your visit.
