Advocating for Skin-to-skin after C-section
When Megan Canning had her baby boy by C-section, it was incredibly important to her that she could snuggle skin-to-skin right away.
Megan and her beautiful little newborn got that precious moment.
St. Joe’s Women’s & Infants’ program has introduced immediate skin-to-skin contact after a cesarean birth. Skin-to-skin is when the baby is placed directly on mom’s skin right after delivery.
Many newborns delivered by C-sections don’t often get the same opportunity to cuddle as those delivered vaginally. Different than vaginal births, C-sections are a major surgery, and it can often be more complicated to provide that skin-to-skin contact. But with studies continuing to point to the bundles of benefits it offers, St. Joe’s is working towards supporting skin-to-skin for each family, regardless of the delivery type.
In 2002, St. Joe’s became the first accredited Baby-Friendly hospital in Hamilton, and is continually committed to implementing and maintaining baby-friendly practices.
