Providing hands on experience at this year's Take Our Kids to Work Day
On Wednesday, November 2nd, 84 Grade 9 children/step-children of employees at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton were onsite across all Campuses partaking in the 2016 Take Our Kids to Work Day.
Take Our Kids to Work Day is an annual national program that takes place the first Wednesday of November. The goal of the day is for Grade 9 students to help develop their career ambition by observing first hand their parents' place of employment.
Coordinated through the Volunteer Resources office, students participate in a full day program designed to provide a variety of learning opportunities in different units/departments across St. Joe's. Each Campus has its own unique schedule of the events with students rotating to different interactive workshops.
"By organizing a full day of workshops, we are able to expose students to the wide range of career options within health care. Not only do they see their parents' work environment, they also learn about what their parents' colleagues in other departments do each day as well," explained Heather McConnell, Coordinator, Volunteer Resources. "A lot of work goes into making this day a great success and it would not be possible without the support of all the staff involved!"
Students at the Charlton Campus participated in education sessions at the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS), Biomedical Engineering,
Diagnostic Imaging, Hemodialysis, Speech Language Pathology, Physiotherapy,
Laboratory and Infection Prevention and Control.
At the King Campus, students learned about St. Joe's award winning Employee Wellness Program, Hemodialysis, Stay Well Program, Surgery Centre and the Urgent Care Centre.
Students at the West 5th Campus engaged in educational workshops facilitated by the Youth Wellness Centre and Human Resources while also participating in Neuropsychology: Testing Brains and Hearing Distressing Voices: A Simulated Experience.
All students met their parents for lunch and concluded the day with a hospital tour.
