How the heat effects air quality
St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton's ER doctor, Dr. Buchanan
A special air quality statement was issued today for most of Southern Ontario, after the hot and sunny weather increased concentrations of ground-level ozone.
While poor air quality is a concern for everyone, experts are particularly worried about those suffering with breathing or lung problems.
“We notice people with cardiac or repository issues, the high heat can cause an exacerbation of those conditions so we do see an increase in those calls.” Ian Sinclair, EMS
Horizon Utilities service in Hamilton and St. Catharines says electricity usage peaked at 3:30 this afternoon at 995 mega watts. That’s higher than last summer’s record peak but the utility is confident it can handle the demand.
