Hamilton study finds caregivers at risk for depression
The caregivers of critically ill patients – such as families and friends – are at risk for clinical depression, according to a new study by researchers at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University. The study was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Over two-thirds of the caregivers surveyed showed symptoms of depression for up to seven days following patient discharge. A year following discharge, over 40% of caregivers still showed symptoms of depression.
Dr. Kevin Smith, CEO St. Joe's Health System, and Dr. Jill Rudkowski, physician in internal medicine and critical care at St. Joe's, comment on the new study in an article from the Hamilton Spectator.
