On April 29th, 2014 St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton Volunteer Resources Department was awarded the Employer Champion Award, specifically for high school experiential learning opportunities (Co-op). The department offers various different placements for high school co-op students throughout Fall, Winter and Summer terms. The several co-op placements are available at all three of St. Joe’s campuses in inpatient units, out-patient clinics, and also non-clinical support areas.
This award is given to Ontario employers who have provided outstanding school-work experiences to high school students which could include offering students job shadowing, school-work transition programs, mentoring, classroom or worksite visits, career talks, cooperative education, and an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
Nominations for this award are taken on an ongoing basis, reviewed quarterly and the awards are thus given out on a quarterly basis. Although receiving the award is an accomplishment, the honour of giving the opportunity for many youth to gain work-related knowledge, skills and experience is rewarding for St. Joe’s.
The applications that are handed in to the Provincial Partnership Council (PPC) use a simple point system where 50 points is required to earn the designation. One point is awarded for every school-work opportunity, either student placement or outreach activity, provided by an employer in the applicable academic year. Student placements are awarded one point for every participating student.
