St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is a proud leader in the treatment of mental health and medical care. The Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare at St. Joseph’s West 5^th Campus was designed to transform how mental illness and addiction are viewed. Mental illness and addiction are no different from any other medical disorder, such as diseases of the heart or lungs. Our hospital is a place where people will receive holistic and integrated treatment. At St. Joseph’s West 5^th Campus, patients can get an MRI of their knee, receive treatment for depression, get help with their diabetes and learn how to manage their alcoholism or schizophrenia. 

Opened in February 2014 the facility is an academic health sciences centre where research, clinical care and an educational culture are interconnected. The West 5^th Campus is fully equipped with laboratories and brain imaging facilities connecting research and innovation with clinical care. Our respected academic and research partner, McMaster University, operates the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural and Neurosciences in the new facility. Here, they have the resources they need to make new discoveries about the causes and treatment of mental illness. Our Campus is a busy, energetic place with nursing students, social work students, occupational therapy, medical and graduate students eager to learn about mental health.

We work in partnership with members of our community who are seeking care, and with their families, to meet their needs and help them achieve the fullest recovery possible. Design

The redevelopment of the West 5^th Campus enabled us to bring all of our mental health and addiction services together under one roof in a modern, comfortable and professional setting. We provide patients with access to the best possible prevention, diagnosis and treatment services in a space they feel comfortable. The new West 5^th Campus is central to care in our community; it provides diagnostic services like MRI and imaging services, as well as outpatient medical clinics.

The building offers 14 inpatient units and several outpatient clinics to serve all of our clients’ needs. Integrating community and client services into one facility helps contribute to the de-stigmatization of mental health care and addiction. Each inpatient has their own bedroom, which encourages independence, privacy and safety. The design of the building communicates hope; natural light fills bedrooms, clinical and public spaces, which makes the facility inviting and welcoming to everyone.

The space is multi-functional, so clinical, research and educational work can take place throughout the building. The state-of-the-art Auditorium and Conference Centre can accommodate presentations and conferences.

The integration of care and community at the West 5^th Campus extends beyond the healthcare services we provide with the use of outdoor recreation such as a baseball diamond, tennis courts and eight kilometers of walking trails. The landscape is designed to create a tranquil space where mind and body can heal simultaneously.

Environmentally Friendly Project

St. Joseph’s West 5^th Campus was certified with LEED Gold. 

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a third-party program that certifies buildings that are designed, constructed and maintained using environmentally friendly materials and systems. The building at West 5^th includes the following LEED features:

• Adequate space for secure bicycle storage and shower facilities for staff
• Close proximity to public transportation routes
• Preservation of mature trees on the central and west portions of the Campus with over 500 new trees planted, which includes native and drought species
• Storm Water Management System to minimize water pollution
• Highly efficient plumbing fixtures to reduce indoor water usage by 20%
• Low emitting materials used during construction to ensure improved indoor environmental quality
• PVC roof and strategic east-west orientation of building to increase building heat naturally from the sun
• 90% of construction materials come from landfills and recyclable products
