Hospital Security

Who We Are

The Security Services department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) strives to provide a safe and healthy environment for all patients, visitors, employees and the public. Through our various skills and training practices, we are dedicated to protecting and upholding the mission and values of SJHH. Security Professionals at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton are also charged with ensuring adherence and compliance to the Criminal Code of Canada, all pertinent legal statutes within the province of Ontario, as well as internal policies and procedures. 

All Security Professionals employed by St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton are legally required to hold licenses in good standing with the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Services (PSIS) branch, and are certified annually in Crisis Intervention, Tactical Communication, Use of Force, as well as annual reviews of all statutory amendments to the Criminal Code of Canada. We take pride in our responsibilities and strive to provide our services in keeping with the spirit and example of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is an honour to serve our community.

What we do...

Security Professionals are called upon to maintain a safe and secure environment for all patients, staff and visitors to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Our duties include Crisis Management, Response to Emergency Codes, Proactive Security Patrols, Bi-Law and Policy Enforcement, Access Control, Community Relations, General Assistance and Facilities Monitoring. Security Professionals are on site and available 24/7.

We also work closely with our partners at the Hamilton Police Service and Hamilton Fire Service to ensure we adhere to all community standards of security, crime prevention and safety.

Emergency Procedures

During times of emergency it is important to remain calm at all times. The staff and volunteers are here to assist you in ensuring that you are in a safe and secure environment. 

Upon Discovery of Smoke or Fire: 

  • Remain Calm 
  • Locate and pull the nearest fire alarm pull station 
  • Notify a Hospital staff person 
  • Follow all instructions from Hospital staff and volunteers 

Upon Hearing the Fire Alarm (Code Red) 

  • Remain Calm 
  • Return to your room and close the door 
  • If you are already in your room, remain there 
  • Follow all instructions from the hospital staff and volunteers 
  • Please be aware the elevators will stop operating during the period of the emergency 

The fire alarm will ring in the alert stage initially. An all clear will be announced when you can return to normal operations. 

Potential Hazards

Do not bring electrical equipment into the Hospital. If you are bringing items such as personal stereos or razors, please ensure they are battery operated. 

Crime Prevention

As a past recipient of the Solicitor General’s Award for Crime Prevention, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is committed to ensuring the safety of all who come in contact with our Hospital sites. Working together, we can make a difference. Here are some helpful safety tips: 

  • Always leave un-necessary valuables at home 
  • Always be aware of other staff or visitors leaving items unattended 
  • Always check for valid Hospital ID 
  • Always notify Security of suspicious persons in your area 
  • Upon discovery of a missing item, please notify security immediately 

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is a public building, and as a precaution, patients and visitors are asked to carefully watch and secure all personal belongings. 

Lost and Found

Any inquiries regarding lost or found items can be made at the Security office, Mary Grace Wing, Charlton Campus G1103, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm. After hours and on weekends please call the main hospital number at 905 522-1155 and ask the switchboard operator to transfer you to the Security department at the specific location you require. 

Smoke-Free Initiative

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is committed to providing a healthy smoke-free environment for patients, staff, volunteers, and visitors. This prohibits the smoking/use of tobacco, electronic cigarettes and cannabis (medical and non-medical) on hospital property (indoor and outdoor grounds).
