McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Health System partnered to have 30 undergraduate students, graduate students and Alumni from a variety of disciplines compete in a Dragon’s Den-meets-Hackathon style health innovation boot camp called the Innovation Sprint.
Supported by the Michael G. DeGroote Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare, the event was broken into three phases. The first day encouraged students to employ design thinking methodologies to empathize with patients who live with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and learn about the current model for the St. Joseph Health System’s Integrated Comprehensive Care program. The program integrates hospital, home and community care providers to streamline access to patient care and increase quality of life. After identifying a key problem to address, student teams evaluated opportunities for innovation, prototyped their ideas and learned the key elements of an impactful pitch. The third day culminated in teams sharing their ideas with a panel from St. Joseph’s senior leadership team and industry professionals, in a Dragon’s Den style pitch for a chance to win $1,000.
Follow along by watching the videos below to learn about what innovative ideas the students created and pitched.
