June Pearce receives the 2017 Senior of the Year Award
Last week, 34 individuals were honoured by the City of Hamilton at the 22nd annual Senior of the Year Awards. This ceremony honours senior citizens who have made an outstanding voluntary contribution to enrich the social, cultural or civic life of our community.
Alongside Myrtle Inwood was another proud St. Joe's volunteer, June Pearce who also received the 2017 Compassion and Companionship Award.
June is the longest serving volunteer at Neighbour to Neighbour Centre, and this year marks her 26th serving the most vulnerable in the community. She is involved in so many areas, such as the food bank, Christmas programs, fundraisers and as a literacy tutor. For over 40 years, June has dedicated her time to Girl Guides of Canada where she promotes fellowship and leadership. She has been involved in training and leadership roles, as well as Division Commissioner.
Over the past 15 years, June has been involved with two churches within the Anglican Diocese. As Chair of the Hospital Visiting Committee, she trains volunteers to provide support to fellow parishioners during their hospital stays. She also took the lead on the Diocesan Youth Committee where she organized summer camps for youth, and designed and facilitated training for weekend leadership conferences.
Here at St. Joe’s, June has been volunteering at the West 5th Campus for the past 3 years. June began her volunteer role as a Wayfinding and Tour Ambassador of the new facility and was very instrumental in leading tours of the building for the many community members that were anxious to see the inside of the building prior to the official opening. Post move, June transitioned to a volunteer role in the Twice as Nice clothing store and has been in this role ever since. June has contributed a total of 388 hours to date.
We couldn't be more proud to have June as part of the St. Joe's family.
