Everyone gets nervous or anxious from time to time however for some people, anxiety becomes so frequent, or so forceful, that it begins to take over their lives. Well, you are not alone!
What is anxiety?
As defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary anxiety is, “An overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (such as sweating, tension, and increased pulse), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat and by self-doubt about one’s capacity to cope with it.”
Who gets anxiety?
Everyone! Anxiety is a normal and common emotion. We all experience anxiety at various times in our lives, for example, preparing for tests, an interview, major life changes or events, work-related stressors, – just to name a few.
When does anxiety become a problem?
Anxiety begins to become a problem when frequency and intensity increase and distress is caused, also when anxiety is damaging in our relationships, our social life and our ability to work or school commitments.

- Try something new. New situations can make you feel anxious, but they can also help you grow. Just take it slow and remember everyone experiences anxiety at times.
- Face your fears. Although avoidance decreases anxiety in the short-term, it maintains anxiety in the long-term. Gradually facing feared situations can help you overcome your fears.
- Take time for yourself. Engaging in regular self-care activities, such as exercising, relaxation, getting enough sleep, and eating nutritious meals, can help you manage symptoms of anxiety and stress.
- Be mindful. Paying attention to your thoughts in anxiety-provoking situations can help you to identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that may be maintaining your anxiety.
- Problem Solve. When faced with uncertainty our minds often go to the worst case scenario, try to see if you can identify some neutral or possible outcomes as well. Often the outcome isn't as negative as we predict.
