Dr. Mehran Anvari has received the NASA – International Space Station (ISS) R & D Award for his work in applying robotic technology from the International Space Station to detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Dr. Anvari is the CEO of the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation (CSii), a researcher at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and a professor of surgery at McMaster University. His work with CSii has focused primarily on leveraging Canadian space technology for use in the development of Image Guided Automated Robots (IGAR) to improve surgical procedures – leading to greater access for surgeons as well as less trauma and better outcomes for patients.
IGAR Breast works in combination with an MRI scanner to detect and treat cancer in its earliest stages with remarkable precision and accuracy.
In the future, Dr. Anvari and his team hope to use the IGAR robot to diagnose and treat diseases in the; lungs, liver, kidneys, bones and prostate.
