Art has a unique ability to heal when words are not enough
The 8th Annual Recovery Awareness Breakfast took place on September 24th at the Hamilton Convention Centre to recognize those who have found a path to recovery through artistic expression. The event was hosted by Hamilton Addiction System with the theme, "Listen to your Art - The Power of Expression Heals the Journey," celebrating women, men and youth who are recovering from substance abuse.
"The Recovery Awareness Breakfast is about honouring the many people in Hamilton who are working towards or in recovery from their substance abuse," says Debbie Bang, Manager of Womankind Addiction Service and Men's Withdrawal Management Centre, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. "This year we are learning how the role of art in all different mediums (music, writing, song), helps people to re-discover themselves outside of their substance use as they become who they are meant to be."
Eight years ago, Addictions Ontario, the provincial agency for addiction services in Ontario invited communities to promote the message that people can and do recover from addiction. Hamilton has hosted a breakfast ever since to celebrate recovery from addiction and lend support to those who are working towards recovery.
