“Our staff, physicians, and volunteers will remember this as the day we welcomed our patients into the new facility at the West 5th Campus for years to come,” says Dr. David Higgins, President, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
“By continuing to provide kind and compassionate care each and every day, our patients and their loved ones will remember this day as a new beginning filled with hope.”

With the opening of the new facility, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) has set out to re-imagine medical and mental health care. Through research and innovation, and a deep commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care, this regional facility is poised to help break down barriers to holistic care for the mind, body and soul.
The new facility at the West 5th Campus is a first of its kind in Canada. Across the nation, no other academic hospital facility has realized the same level of seamless integration of medical and mental health care. The unique concept of the Galleria as a transitional space filled with therapeutic freedoms within a safe perimeter is also a first of its kind in Canada.
“After ten years of visioning, planning and development, today we set forth on our journey to re-imagine medical and mental health care,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, CEO, St. Joseph’s Health System. “What we do here will lead the way in our province and the country.”
