SJHH Celebrates the Grand Opening of the New West 5th Campus
Friday, January 24, 2014 – Hamilton, ON – St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton opened the doors to its new Margaret and Charles Juravinksi Centre for Integrated Healthcare, at its West 5th Campus on Thursday, January 23, 2014. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Minister of Health and Long Term Care, Deb Matthews, hospital leaders and members of the Hamilton Board Committee joined us as dignitaries, donors, staff, and patients to open the 855,000+ square foot facilities, designed and dedicated to re-imagining care for mental health and addiction.
Ten years in the making, the new Centre is a first in Ontario, designed to break down barriers to access to care while also reducing latent stigmas surrounding mental health and addiction. It does so through an integrated healthcare model which blends medical and mental health services together. Dr. Kevin Smith, Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph’s Health System, said, “Led by visionary Board members and our clinical experts, we have worked very hard to ensure that our province’s investment in the future of mental health, addiction, medical, and diagnostic care speak to the principles we believe in…breaking down barriers through integration and holistic care, enhanced privacy and dignity for those in recovery, and a strong connection with our community to ensure people are receiving the right care in the right place”.
Deputy Premier Wynne toured the new campus and demonstrated her confidence in her government’s investment in healthcare. She said, “In this climate, light is critical to life, not just healing. This centre represents an important shift in how we treat mental health in this province”.
The new facility houses 305 inpatient beds, mental health and medical outpatient clinics, academic and research centers and administrative support services. The building features 16 courtyards, gardens, and terraces, a spiritual center, museum of mental health and public spaces with lots of natural light. The Galleria, a unique space designed to integrate recovery with social living, features a wellness centre, coffee shop, clothing store, salon and book store.
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is proud to open a new campus that will work side by side with the community to integrate medical and mental health services. Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long Term Care, said, “We are bringing the community and healthcare together,” which is the promise St. Joseph’s intends to renew. The new West 5th Campus gives us an opportunity to re-imagine care for the mind, the body and the spirit of every patient.
Patients will move into the new building on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
