Nephrology & Renal Transplant Inpatient Units

What these programs do...

The Nephrology and Renal Transplant Units at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton provide a wide range of specialized care and services for patients affected by chronic kidney disease or nephrological disorders.

The nephrology inpatient program is a 28 bed unit and the renal transplant unit is a 7 bed unit. Both units have exceptionally experienced staff that specializes in the treatment, management and care of patients who are admitted to the unit with chronic kidney disease or urological disorders.

Many members of the extensive interdisciplinary health care team may be involved in nephrological and renal transplant inpatient care including nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, nephrologists, surgeons, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, diabetes specialists, dieticians, speech-language pathologists, spiritual care practitioners, unit clerks, community care access center staff as well as staff specializing in inpatient peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis treatments.

How these programs help...

As a specialized and advanced centre of excellence for the treatment and study of nephrological disorders, we work closely in partnership with other services, centres, academic groups and organizations to ensure a continuum of care for patients, that integrates medical, surgical and mental health services.

Our significantly redeveloped patient centred unit space enables us to offer enhanced health programs for nephrology and renal transplant patients that embrace the evolving healthcare philosophy of transparency, rapid access to care, confidentiality and the vital inclusion of patients and family members as primary decision makers in their health planning.

The inpatient nephrology and renal transplant unit teams recognize that chronic diseases such as kidney and urinary disease are prolonged conditions that have a profound impact on the physical, emotional and mental well being of individuals. It is our goal to minimize the effects of deterioration in health by providing compassionate, patient centred care, support, and education to our patients and their families.
