What the SCIS does...

The SCIS provides person-centred, specialized mental health care for people with schizophrenia and related illnesses living in Hamilton and the surrounding regions of Halton, Brant, and Haldimand-Norfolk.

Our aim is to support people with experiences of psychosis related to schizophrenia to regain and manage their health, and to live hopeful, meaningful lives through the provision of compassionate, innovative, specialized mental health and addiction services.

Our leading services are actively engaged in the education of future healthcare providers and the advancement of knowledge through ground-breaking research.

How the SCIS helps...

People who use our service will have the opportunity to:

Engage in services that are caring and respectful of each individual’s culture, personal dignity, and trauma experiences
Work in partnership with providers directed by each individual’s personal goals
Participate in comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment, self-management and recovery planning that will
- Focus on improving mental, emotional, physical, spiritual health & wellness
- Assist with meeting basic living needs (e.g. finances, housing, food, safety)
- Involve family &/or others they choose
- Promote knowledge, skills & confidence to make personal choices & decisions regarding treatment, self-management & recovery with the least possible reliance on formal mental health services
- Support individuals to (re)engage in a variety of meaningful roles
Shape and improve the delivery of mental health and addiction services by participating in education of others, and in the planning and evaluation of services
Contribute to our knowledge of mental illness and addiction, health and wellness by participating in research studies

Transitional Outpatient Program of the Schizophrenia Service (TOPSS) bridging people from inpatient to outpatient care.

Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)

“Prevention and Early Intervention Safety Training is provided to all staff and learners at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Included in this training are the skills and strategies necessary to support a person through a crisis situation safely and effectively. Trauma Informed Care, physical safety skills and St. Joseph's policy and procedure are integrated throughout the various levels of training as staff learn how to identify a person in crisis, and gain knowledge around early interventions that ensure the safety of staff, the person in crisis and others.”

Nursing Resource Team

“The Nursing Resource Team is a staffing team that provides nursing services across inpatient care programs at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. The team at West 5^th campus is comprised of full-time and part-time RN’s and RPN’s whose shifts are assigned to various clinical units within the Mental Health and Addictions Program to meet staffing requirements.”

Please let us know if English is not the language you and your family members understand. We can arrange the services of a professional cultural interpreter free of charge.

Planning Your Care

You and (if you wish) your family or friends can be active partners in your care.
You can expect to participate in an assessment to help determine your needs and goals to direct a plan of care. We are concerned with the whole person and how illness has impacted your daily life.
Tell us what has worked and not worked for you to manage your health. Also, let us know what has helped keep you healthy, well and strong.

We ask that you do not bring any valuables with you as the hospital cannot be responsible for lost or stolen personal items.
