Inpatient Units
The inpatient psychiatric services at the Charlton Campus provide firstline comprehensive clinical care in an acute setting. As an integral part of the Mental Health Program at St. Joseph's Healthcare, our multi-disciplinary team is committed to creating an environment of recovery that recognizes and encourages staff to provide the best client-centered care for our clients and their families.

Components of Service
Acute Care - 9th Floor, Juravinski Innovation Tower
A 30-bed unit located on the 9th Floor of the Juravinski Innovation Tower, Charlton Campus. This interdisciplinary team provides comprehensive assessment, treatment and discharge planning for patients with acute and chronic psychiatric disorders.

Acute Care - 10th Floor Tower
A 30-bed unit located on the 10th Floor of the Juravinski Innovation Tower, Charlton Campus. This multi-disciplinary team provides rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment stabilization of those individuals with acute mental health illness.

Consultation Liaison Service
The Consultation Liaison Service offers psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients in the medical, surgical, and obstetrical areas of St. Joseph's Healthcare. The service is provided by a staff psychiatrist and a full-time consultation liaison nurse.
Acute Psychiatry Unit - A2 – West 5th Campus
The Acute Psychiatry Unit is a 22-bed unit located out St. Joseph’s Healthcare’s West 5th Campus which provides mental health care to patients suffering from acute symptoms of mental disorders. We have a complete interdisciplinary team available to meet the varied needs of our patients. Our goal is to assess and stabilize patients, and to reintegrate them back into the community at optimal levels of functioning. While our temporary home is located on unit A2 at the West 5th Campus, we will eventually move to Charlton Campus amidst the additional acute care Psychiatry services offered by St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.
How to access services
Patients are referred to the acute inpatient psychiatric services through a variety of referral sources that include: EPT, Community Services, Attending Physicians, and Consultation Liaison.
About the Team:
Care is provided by a interdisciplinary team, which includes Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Social Workers, Recreational Therapists, Spiritual Care, Pharmacists, Psychology Services and Psychiatrists
Education:
The psychiatry program is linked closely to both McMaster University and Mohawk College. The faculties of medicine, nursing, social work, and recreation therapy all place learners in our clinical programs. Many members of the staff have formal responsibilities to teach and mentor learners.
Research:
In keeping with the Strategic Directions for the Mental Health Program and the Mission of St. Joseph's Healthcare, mental health research has been developed with a multi-disciplinary focus. Our current CQI projects include: Inpatient Perceptions of Care, ECT Patient Satisfaction, Introduction of the SCL90, and Implementation of the RAI-MH.
