Despite working within operating rooms constructed in the 1960’s, St. Joseph’s has emerged as a leader in surgical care, and an innovator in minimally invasive and telerobotics-assisted techniques. But there comes a time when it no longer makes sense to retrofit current facilities; a time when the existing space is simply not adequate to house the technology required for modern surgeries, nor the growing number of people that comprise a modern surgical team; a time when the current number of operating rooms cannot sustain the ever-growing demand for surgical care in our region. That time is now.At St. Joseph’s, we’re taking a bold step and creating a surgical centre that will enable us to meet the growing and changing needs of the tens of thousands of surgical patients we treat each year. The new Surgical Centre will house state-of-the-art operating rooms ranging in size from 600 to 1,000 square feet. These rooms will accommodate the growing number of healthcare professionals who care for a patient during their surgery at St. Joseph’s: doctors, nurses, anesthetists and residency students. In concert with an unparalleled surgical team, each OR will be equipped with the latest in minimally invasive and image-guided technology while two of the rooms will be larger to accommodate telerobotic surgical equipment.
For our patients, procedures that are image-guided, minimally invasive and telerobotics-assisted, mean that our surgeons are making smaller, more precise incisions, speeding healing in their patients, minimizing the chance of infection, reducing the scarring and pain associated with a surgical procedure and shortening patient recovery times exponentially.
