Message from the President and C.E.O., St. Joseph's Health System

Building on our philosophy, that clinical care, health professional education and health care research are three elements that create truly excellent health care, St. Joseph's Healthcare has emerged as one of Canada's leading health science centres. At the heart of our success are our physicians, staff and volunteers who exemplify our belief that dignity, respect and compassion are central to high quality services. "Living our Mission" is a key component of our success.

As a major academic health science centre we provide integrated clinical services across four major sites, which include our Charlton, West 5th, King and Brantford Campuses. Our tremendous growth has brought millions in Federal and Provincial grants to Hamilton and attracted significant business partnerships. We believe that being a good community partner is part of our role and we see the local economy, environment and community pride as shared responsibilities.

As a Teaching Hospital affiliated with McMaster University, we also educate and train hundreds of health care professionals every year. The physicians, nurses and other health professionals we train are the heart of our future health care system and we fulfill this role with pride. In so doing now, more than ever, we are mindful of the demands on the health care system and those who work within it. Creating an environment that fosters ongoing learning and a high degree of satisfaction is central to our commitment to supporting our staff and ensuring maximal retention and recruitment

Research is also important to our Mission, and St. Joseph's Healthcare is home to the world-renowned Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, the Centre for the Evaluation of Medicines, and the new Brain-Body Institute. Our many research initiatives are integrated by the multimillion-dollar Father Sean O'Sullivan Research Centre, which continues to expand research funding each year.

St. Joseph's Healthcare remains rooted in the spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph who established St. Joseph's Hospital 100 years ago and for us it is an honour to serve our community.

Dr. Kevin Smith
President and C.E.O.
Associate Professor, DeGroote School of Medicine
