As the Flu season is upon us, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton's Maternal Newborn Child Program is taking extra precautions to keep our patients and their families healthy. We kindly ask that you follow these guidelines at all times. Labour and Delivery 24 hours
- Two support partners only (one banded and alternate).
- No siblings.
Postpartum Combined Care
- Two support partners only (one banded and alternate).
- One support partner with band can stay 24 hours.
- Second support partner can stay from 2:00pm to 8:00pm.
- No siblings.
NICU 24 hours (except report time)
- Mother and one support partner with ID band only.
- No siblings.

Welcome to the St. Joseph's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
We are located an the 3rd floor of the Bishop Dowling wing. The unit has a 20-bed capacity. Parents may visit anytime with the exception of 6:45 - 8:00 am and pm. All parents and visitors must sign in at the nursing station, as well as sign out on departure.![]() Bunk Rooms |

Bunk Rooms
Four bunkrooms are available for a 24 - 48 hour parenting experience, for the parents and babies preparing for discharge. These rooms can also be utilized for visiting parents to rest in between feeds. The NICU also has a room on an availability basis with all amenities to facilitate parents who have special needs babies and those with multiple births.
Breastfeeding Rooms
A room within the NICU for breastfeeding mothers. The room consists of 3 areas divided by curtains for privacy. This room is also utilized for mothers that are using breast pumps to express milk. There are five breast pumps available. Breast pump kits can be obtained at the nursing station free of charge.
Family Room
This is a room for the visiting family that is decorated and equipped for comfort. It contains a TV/VCR with educational and entertainment tapes which are available on request. A phone is also available in the room to make local calls. This room is for the stable baby and family to spend some private time together.
NICU Rooms
NICU Room #1
This room is for babies requiring closer observation, and is equipped for all infant emergencies. According to severity of illness, each nurse takes care of a maximum of 3 babies. Once stable, babies will graduate from this room to NICU Room #2.
NICU Room #2
A room for growing babies learning to feed. The baby to nurse ratio ranges from 4 - 6 babies per nurse. Most babies in this room are preparing for eventual discharge home.
Scrub Rooms
All parents and visitors must wash their hands prior to entering the NICU. We strive to keep babies in our unit safe and protected against infection. More Information
