State of the Art Intensive Care Unit

St. Joseph's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 15 bed, medical-surgical unit that provides tertiary and quaternary level critical care services at the Charlton site. The ICU serves as a regional academic referral center to Central-Western Ontario and includes the following services: Renal, Thoracic, Respiratory, and Head & Neck. Additional services include General Internal Medicine, Vascular and General Surgery.

The ICU is renowned for its clinical excellence, and is recognized as a world leader in critical care research.

Patients are offered spacious rooms with excellent nursing care and the availability of state of the art technology. Patient care is also well supported by specially trained medical specialists and other health professionals including respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, clerical staff, etc.

As an academic and research facility, St. Joseph's ICU is a very busy unit with high acuity and complex patients; approximately 1000 patients are admitted each year. The ICU can also provide some advanced treatment modalities such as renal replacement therapy and High Frequency Oscillation Ventilation (HFOV). The unit provides excellent opportunities for educational experience, including problem-solving skills and clinical decision-making. Staff work closely with patients and families to provide a supportive and caring atmosphere during this stressful time.
