Overview
The Redevelopment Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, is responsible for ensuring that renovations to our facility meet the needs of patients, visitors, volunteers, staff and physicians. Each of our campuses provides unique opportunities and challenges for ongoing redevelopment.
The existing facility at our Charlton Campus has seven different wings, each built in stages between 1950 and 2005, and the King Street Campus was built in 1990. Both campuses have undergone, or are in the process of undergoing, several major redevelopment projects. The West 5th Street Campus is planning to re-build an entirely new facility on the mountain site.
Through on-going redevelopment projects, St. Joseph’s Healthcare continues to strive to enhance the patient experience and the quality of work-life for the St. Joseph’s care team members. Healthcare design is increasingly guided by research linking the physical environment of hospitals to patient and staff outcomes. Appropriate design of healthcare settings, along with a culture that prioritizes the health and safety of the patient and the care team through its policies and values, can improve overall patient health and reduce the risk of disease and injury to hospital staff.
Each redevelopment project provides a unique opportunity to evaluate departmental design, flow and space utilization, and initiates a planning process that considers an improved design to increase effectiveness in delivering care. Appropriate design details can improve patient privacy, safety and outcomes. The physical environment also plays an important role in improving the health and safety for staff, thereby increasing effectiveness in providing care. Implementation of this redevelopment project planning philosophy enables us to continue to enhance the infrastructure, technology and research facilities at each of our campuses, therefore improving the quality of patient care for the residents of the communities we serve.
